Praised for his "bright and richly expressive" bass voice, Niall's wide ranging operatic repertoire includes works by Purcell through to Bernstein. His roles include Neptune (The Tempest), Collatinus (The Rape of Lucretia), Mourner's Bass (A Quiet Place), Aeneas (Dido and Aeneas), Escamillo (Carmen), Somnus (Semele), Bertrand (Iolanta), Harašta (The Cunning Little Vixen), Sprecher (Die Zauberflöte), Le Philosophe (Chérubin), Frank Maurant (Street Scene), Sacristan (Tosca), and Barone di Kelbar (Un Giorno di Regno). In the 2024/2025 season he makes debuts in the roles of Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin and Deputé Flamand in Don Carlos, as well as returning to the roles of Erster Priester/Zweiter Geharnischter Mann at the Opéra de Paris. Niall will make his Italian debut at the Teatro Petruzelli in the summer of 2025. He has worked with conductors such as Carlo Rizzi, Eduardo Strausser, Antonello Manacorda, Laurence Cummings and Yshani Perinpanayagam.

 

Niall feels at home in a wide range of repertoire and styles. His oratorio repertoire includes Christus in Bach's St Johannes Passion and St Mathew Passion, the Requiems of Mozart, Fauré and Brahms, A Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle and Mendelssohn's Elijah. A keen performer of new music, Niall has premiered works by Thomas Lavoy and sang the Baritone Solo in the Welsh premier of Paul Mealor’s Symphony No.1, Passiontide. His concert performances have taken him worldwide singing with the Cairo Celebration Choir in a performance of Elgar's The Light of Life. Niall also feels at home in song repertoire and has given recitals in the UK and across Europe.

As a member of the Académie de L'Opéra National de Paris Niall performed numerous song recitals in the Amphithéatre Olivier Messiaen, as well as working with leading conductors such as Jory Vinakour, Leonardo Alàrcon and Kent Nagano. 

 

At the Royal Academy of Music, Niall studied with Glenville Hargreaves and Jonathan Papp. He was a soloist in the RAM/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series and performed with the Song Circle on numerous occasions. In 2019 Niall was a finalist in the Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks competition and was the winner of the Pavarotti Prize in the same year. His studies at the Royal Academy were supported by the Josephine Baker Trust, The Robertson Trust, The Caird Trust, The Cross Trust, The Kathleen Trust, and The Fordyce Award.

In masterclass and coachings Niall has worked with many distinguished artists such as Sir Simon Keenlyside, Brindley Sherratt, Christopher Purves, Malcolm Martineau, Anne Sofie von Otter and Sondra Radvanovsky.

Niall is also an avid music educator and voice teacher. He has held positions at universities such as King's College London, and currently is a Professor of Singing at the Plymouth University in Devon. He will also lead a masterclass at the University of Aberdeen in April 2025.

Originally from the east coast of Fife, Niall studied music at the University of Aberdeen and was awarded the Ogston Music Prize for outstanding musicianship upon graduating. Niall is also fluent french speaker and an avid golfer.
