Recognised for his "bright and richly expressive" bass voice, Niall's wide ranging operatic repertoire includes works by Purcell through to Bernstein. His roles include Neptune (The Tempest,) at La Grange au Lac, Collatinus (The Rape of Lucretia) at Theatre Bouffes du Nord, Allazim (Zaide) at Angers/Nantes Opera and Opera de Rennes, Mourner's Bass (A Quiet Place), First Priest/SecondArmed Man/Sprecher (Die Zauberflöte), Depute Flamand (Don Carlos), Frank Maurant (Street Scene), all at the Opera de Paris, Escamillo (Carmen) at Atelier Lyrique Tourcoing, Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Sacristan (Tosca) both at Northern Ireland Opera,  Barone di Kelbar (cover) (Un Giorno di Regno) at Garsington Opera, Somnus (Semele), Bertrand (Iolanta), Harašta (The Cunning Little Vixen), Le Philosophe (Chérubin) all at Royal Academy Opera. 

In the 2025/2026 season Niall makes his debuts as AlaskaWolfJoe in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny at the Teatro Petruzzelli and Teatro Verdi Trieste, Sparafucile in Rigoletto at the Teatre Principal in Palma, Mallorca, and Shit and Egg (cover) in Pass the Spoon with Opera North. His concert performances have included The Creation with Exeter Festival Chorus, a recital of Schwanengesang and Brahms' 4 Serious Songs at the Vellake Concert Series with Benjamin Mead, Dvorak's Stabat Mater with Epsom Choral Society and Bach's Christmas Oratorio with Bristol Choral Society.

 

His oratorio repertoire includes Christus in Bach's St Johannes Passion and arias in the St Matthew Passion, the requiems of Fauré and Brahms, C minor mass by Mozart, A Sea Symphony by Vaughan Williams, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle and Mendelssohn's Elijah. A keen performer of new music, Niall has premiered works by Thomas Lavoy and sang the Baritone Solo in the Welsh premier of Paul Mealor’s Symphony No.1, Passiontide. His concert performances have taken him worldwide singing with the Cairo Celebration Choir in a performance of Elgar's The Light of Life, and across France performing Mozart's Requiem with the Orchestra de Pay Pays de Bearn. Niall's performances of English songs, Lieder, Melodie and Russian Song have taken him across Europe and the UK.

As a member of the Académie de L'Opéra National de Paris Niall performed numerous song recitals in the Amphithéatre Olivier Messiaen, as well as working with leading conductors such as Jory Vinakour, Leonardo Alàrcon and Kent Nagano.

 

At the Royal Academy of Music, Niall studied with Glenville Hargreaves and Jonathan Papp. He was a soloist in the RAM/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series and performed with the Song Circle on numerous occasions. In 2019 Niall was a finalist in the Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks competition and was the winner of the Pavarotti Prize in the same year. 

Niall is also an avid music educator and voice teacher. He has held positions at universities such as King's College London, and was a Professor of Singing at Plymouth University in Devon. 

Originally from the east of Fife, Niall studied music at the University of Aberdeen and was awarded the Ogston Music Prize for outstanding musicianship upon graduating. Niall also studied French alongside his music degree and is now a fluent speaker.
